The inspiration for this project was a desire to reinterpret the homes of the Highland Park neighborhood with materials and techniques that were available in 1918, namely, the era steel, glass, and Meranti wood. Window-walls are all handcrafted, utilizing the standards of the era, including the hinges, which are all cast bronze. This conceptual home is also part homage to the 1920s Italian craftsmen of the era; Alfa Romeo in its aluminum construction, and in color – Rossa Corsa.
Standing like a sentinel over the private botanical garden, this Highgate home is all about moving through space. Horizontally and vertically the effort is to deconstruct the aspect of home. Cobbled pathways of this Shangri La, an heirloom garden, host to numerous species of natives, and fruit trees create a verdant, cool oasis in the heart of LA, a balanced ecosystem of bees, birds, lizards, and butterflies. This space is truly living art..
